Dr Liz McKechnie
Dr Liz McKechnie has been a consultant neonatologist at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust since 2008. Leeds is a busy neonatal intensive care unit providing cardiac and surgical services for the Yorkshire and Humber region.
Having trained at St. Thomas’s Hospital Medical School in London, qualifying in 1990, she completed a broad range of training in different specialities (obstetrics, general practice, emergency medicine) before deciding that neonatology was the one. Her paediatric/neonatal training was primarily in the South West and several different tertiary centres in Australia. She completed her training in Yorkshire, within the Leeds Neonatal Service.
Liz leads the Family Integrated care team in Leeds, which was the first hospital to introduce the innovative model of care that sees parents as partners in care. She sat on the BAPM Family Integrated Care Committee and co-authored the Framework for Practice, published in 2021. She sits on the International Family Integrated Care Steering Group. Her other focus is Infection Prevention, where she leads a team committed to reducing infection and its consequences within neonatal care.
